拙石 Boulder Series

Filled with movement and dark color the work embodies many of the qualities that define the paintings of Li Xuan. Painted on traditional rice paper, the piece combines ink, light cinnabar and stone yellow Chinese pigment color. Influenced by the works of Qing dynasty painter Zhang Daqian, the artist paints with the impact of splashing color. Depicting the elemental power of drama and natural forces the layered washes of white, grey, indigo and black waken the boulder.
